OBJECTIVE
For this assignment, I wanted to focus on the compositional aspects of typography through a poster. My design centers on the famous funk musician Bootsy Collins, highlighting his unique bass guitar technique with color and typographic arrangement.
RESEARCH
I began this project by researching Bootsy Collins to understand who he is as a person and musician on a deeper level. This process was crucial to my design process, as it allowed me to create more complex, nuanced compositions based on Bootsy Collins' history.
EXPERIMENTATION
I started my design process by selecting words that resonated with who Bootsy Collins is as a person. I then used different techniques to warp the strips of text to create unique visuals. This initial process broadened my perspective on various design possibilities.
CONCEPTUALIZATION
After my initial experimentation process, I shifted my focus to creating larger conceptual designs using similar words from the previous step. I started by cutting and gluing letters in different arrangements on paper, then transitioned to digital design to easily warp my text.
CONCEPTUALIZATION WITH COLOR
Working with color helped me find my final design, as I felt more in tune with the style of Bootsy Collins' music. I experimented with a variety of highly saturated palettes. I chose a split-complementary color scheme of oranges, pinks, and blues because of its strong visual contrast.
FINAL DESIGN
In the end, I chose a dark purple background to add depth. My final design communicates information about Bootsy Collins while reflecting his energetic, funkadelic musical style.
